Searching through cars for sale in Kigali on social media, WhatsApp groups and car sites takes time, and it is hard to know which offers are genuine. We do the legwork for you. Tell us the make, model and budget you have in mind, and we search dealers, importers and private sellers, shortlist the cars worth seeing, arrange an inspection and help you through the paperwork. We are a sourcing service, not a dealer, so we have no stock to push: our job is to find the right car for you.
How our car sourcing works
- Tell us what you want: model, year range, budget, and must-haves such as automatic gearbox, hybrid, seven seats or four wheel drive.
- We search dealers and importers in Kigali, from Kicukiro and Gikondo to Gasabo, plus private sellers across Rwanda.
- We shortlist the best matches and share photos, mileage, asking prices and our notes on each car.
- Inspection. We arrange a mechanical check at a garage before you commit.
- Paperwork. We help you confirm the seller's documents and the RRA transfer steps.
- You buy directly from the seller, at a price you have agreed.

Popular cars in Rwanda
Toyota dominates Rwanda's roads, which keeps spare parts cheap and mechanics familiar. Popular choices include the Corolla, Axio, Premio, Vitz, RAV4, Noah, Land Cruiser Prado, Fortuner and Hilux. Suzuki, Hyundai, Kia and Honda models suit smaller budgets but check parts availability first. Hybrids are popular for their fuel economy, though since 2025 they pay excise duty based on age.
Used cars in Rwanda: what to check
The car itself
- [ ] Mileage that matches the wear on pedals, seats and steering wheel.
- [ ] Service records, or at least recent receipts.
- [ ] Rust under the car and around the wheel arches.
- [ ] Suspension knocks on rough roads: Kigali's side streets and upcountry roads are hard on bushes and shocks.
- [ ] A cold start, with no smoke and no warning lights left on.
- [ ] For hybrids, the condition of the hybrid battery, checked with a diagnostic tool.
- [ ] Left-hand drive: only left-hand drive private cars can be registered.
The paperwork
- [ ] The registration certificate (yellow card) matches the chassis number on the car.
- [ ] The seller's ID matches the registered owner.
- [ ] The seller generates an RRA tracking code showing no tax arrears or caveats.
- [ ] A valid technical inspection certificate from the Rwanda National Police.
- [ ] No unpaid traffic fines linked to the plate.
Ownership transfer step by step
Since late 2023, used car sales in Rwanda go through the RRA e-Tax platform:
- The seller logs in to e-Tax and generates a tracking code for the vehicle.
- RRA checks the seller's tax compliance, arrears and any legal restrictions on the car.
- The sale contract, with the date, value and both parties' details, is generated and signed before a notary.
- The buyer pays the transfer fee of RWF 60,000 for a car (RWF 30,000 for a motorcycle).
- The buyer provides a TIN, a copy of their ID and one year of motor insurance.
- RRA issues the new registration in the buyer's name.
Never pay the full price before the tracking code checks out. It is the simplest protection against selling scams and cars with hidden debts. Pay by bank transfer to the registered owner rather than in cash to a middleman, and keep copies of every document.
Running costs to plan for
- Insurance. Third party cover is compulsory, and comprehensive cover is advisable for newer cars.
- Road maintenance levy. RWF 50,000 a year for a car or jeep, paid to RRA by 31 December.
- Technical inspection. Every year for private cars and every six months for commercial vehicles, plus an emissions test, booked through Irembo.
- Fuel. As of October 2026, petrol is capped at RWF 2,938 per litre.

Can you check a car before I buy it?
Yes. We can arrange a mechanical inspection at a garage and help you check the documents before you pay, including the RRA tracking code that confirms the seller has no tax arrears and no caveats on the vehicle.
How does ownership transfer work in Rwanda?

Can you import a car for me?

Can I register a right-hand drive car in Rwanda?
Ordinary private cars must be left-hand drive to be registered in Rwanda. Exceptions cover heavy trucks, cross border buses and a few special categories. Avoid buying a right-hand drive car expecting to register it.
What budget do I need for a reliable used car?
As a planning guide, a 2015 Toyota Vitz is typically RWF 5.2 million to 9.0 million, a 2018 Corolla RWF 10.1 million to 14.7 million and a 2018 Noah RWF 17.2 million to 25.9 million. Add transfer, insurance and the first service to the budget.
