How booking works

  1. Describe the problem in the form or by WhatsApp. Photos, or a short video of the noise or warning light, help a lot.
  2. Choose a date, and arrange drop-off or collection from your home or office.
  3. Diagnosis and quote. The garage checks the car and we send you the quote for parts and labour.
  4. Approve, and work begins. Nothing extra is done without your approval.
  5. Collect your car with a summary of the work done and the parts used.

Service intervals for Rwandan roads

Most handbooks give two schedules: normal and severe. Rwanda's driving conditions, with dust, steep hills, short trips in city traffic and rough upcountry roads, fit the severe one. Toyota's severe schedule roughly halves the normal intervals, with oil changes at about 5,000 km for many models in dusty conditions.

  • [ ] Engine oil and filter: about every 5,000 km, or sooner if you drive on dirt roads.
  • [ ] Air filter: check at every service, as dust clogs it fast.
  • [ ] Brake pads and fluid: check at every service, since Kigali's hills work the brakes hard.
  • [ ] Suspension and steering joints: inspect at every service.
  • [ ] Tyres: check pressure monthly and tread depth before long trips.
  • [ ] Before the rainy season (March and October): wipers, tyres, lights and brakes.

Oil change in Kigali

An oil change is a quick job to book. Tell us the make, model, year and mileage, and whether you want genuine or quality aftermarket oil and filter. The garage drains the old oil, fits a new filter, refills to the grade in your handbook and resets the service reminder. Ask for the air filter to be checked at the same time, as Rwanda's dust clogs it quickly. The price depends on the oil grade and how many litres your engine takes, so we confirm it before the car goes in. On Rwandan roads, plan for an oil change about every 5,000 km.

Technical inspection and emissions testing

Every vehicle in Rwanda must pass a regular technical inspection by the Rwanda National Police, along with an emissions test run with the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA). Both are booked through Irembo.

Vehicle Inspection frequency
Private car Every year
Commercial vehicle Every six months
Brand new vehicle First inspection two years after manufacture

The police send an SMS reminder about a month before the due date, as long as your details are up to date. If the car fails, a second visit within 14 days costs 20% of the first visit fee. After that, you pay the full fee again. A pre-inspection check at a garage, covering lights, brakes, tyres, wipers, horn and exhaust smoke, avoids most failures.

Parts and prices

We can use genuine or quality aftermarket spare parts, and the quote shows which, with brands. Labour and parts costs depend on the job and the model, so we confirm the full cost before work begins: contact us for a current quote. For owners of used Toyotas, Toyota Rwanda's Team Toyota Garage partner in Gahanga and its service centre in Musanze are also options for genuine parts and maintenance.

Warning signs not to ignore

Some problems get expensive quickly if left. Book a check soon if you notice any of these:

  • A temperature gauge climbing on Kigali's hills, or steam from the bonnet.
  • Grinding or squealing when braking, or a pedal that sinks.
  • A flashing check engine light, which usually means a misfire.
  • Oil or coolant spots under the car where you park.
  • The car pulling to one side, or steering that shakes at speed.
  • A burning smell after a long descent, from brakes or clutch.

If the car overheats, stop somewhere safe, switch off and wait before opening anything. Never open a hot radiator cap.

Buying a car? Inspect it first

A pre-purchase inspection is the cheapest insurance you can buy. We check the engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes, body, hybrid battery where relevant and the electronics, then road test the car. Pair it with our cars for sale in Kigali sourcing service or use it for a car you found yourself.

Areas we serve and booking

Kigali wide, including Nyarutarama, Kacyiru, Kimihurura, Kiyovu, Remera, Kicukiro, Gikondo, Kibagabaga, Kimironko, Gisozi, Nyamirambo and Kanombe. If you need transport while your car is in the garage, see car hire in Kigali.

Frequently asked questions

Will I get a price before work starts?

Yes. After the diagnosis you receive a written quote for parts and labour, showing whether parts are genuine or aftermarket. No work starts until you approve it, and any extra work found during the repair needs your approval too.

Can you collect my car?

Collection and return can be arranged in Kigali for many jobs, from Kimironko and Kibagabaga to Kicukiro and Nyamirambo. Ask in the form, and the quote will show any collection fee.

How often should I service my car in Rwanda?

Follow your car's handbook, but treat Rwanda's dusty, hilly roads as severe conditions. Toyota's severe service schedule calls for oil changes at about 5,000 km or every few months, roughly half the normal interval, and more frequent air filter checks.

How often is the technical inspection in Rwanda?

Private cars need a technical inspection by the Rwanda National Police every year, and commercial vehicles every six months. Brand new cars are first inspected two years after manufacture. Book through Irembo, which also handles the emissions test.

What if my car fails the technical inspection?

You fix the faults and book a second visit. If you return within 14 days, the second visit costs 20% of the first visit fee. After 14 days you pay the full fee again, so it pays to fix the problems quickly.

Can you inspect a car I want to buy?

Yes. A pre-purchase inspection checks the engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes, body and electronics, with a diagnostic scan and a test drive. You get a written summary and an estimate for any repairs before you agree a price.
