Vehicles you can hire in Kigali
Most hire cars in Rwanda are Toyotas, which matters: parts and mechanics are easy to find if anything goes wrong upcountry. Here is how the main classes compare.
| Vehicle | Seats | Luggage | Best for | Indicative self-drive rate (October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saloon (Toyota Corolla, Premio, Axio) | 4 to 5 | 2 medium bags | City driving, business, couples | Contact us for a current quote |
| Compact SUV (Toyota RAV4) | 5 | 3 to 4 bags | Families, paved highways, light gravel | From about USD 45 per day |
| 4x4 (Land Cruiser Prado) | 5 to 7 | 4 to 5 bags | National parks, rougher roads | Contact us for a current quote |
| 4x4 safari Land Cruiser | 5 to 7 | Plenty, often roof rack | Akagera game drives, long safaris | About USD 60 to 110 per day (Prado or TX) |
| Minibus or van (Toyota Hiace, Noah) | 7 to 14 | Depends on passengers | Groups, events, team airport runs | Usually with driver, contact us |
Rates come from published Kigali self-drive offers as of October 2026. Longer hires are cheaper per day: operators typically take about 10% off from 7 days, 15% from 14 days and 20% from 30 days. For a price on your own dates, use the car hire estimator.

How car rental in Kigali works and what it costs
Booking step by step
- Send your request using the form below or by WhatsApp: dates, pick-up place, vehicle type, number of passengers and your rough route.
- Get a written quote showing the vehicle, daily rate, what is included, the deposit, the insurance cover and the excess.
- Confirm, and we arrange delivery or collection at an agreed time and place in Kigali.
- Check the car together at handover: photos of every panel, the fuel level, the spare tyre and the tools.
- Return the car at the agreed place. Any fuel difference, damage or extra days are settled against the deposit.
What affects the price
- Vehicle class. A Land Cruiser costs more than a RAV4, which costs more than a saloon.
- Length of hire. Weekly and monthly rates are lower per day.
- Self-drive or with driver. A driver adds a daily fee, plus meals and accommodation on overnight trips.
- Route. Long upcountry trips and park tracks mean more wear, so some owners price them differently or set a daily mileage limit.
- Delivery. Delivery to the airport or a hotel outside the centre can carry a small fee, shown in your quote.
- Season. Demand peaks in the long dry season from June to September, when safari 4x4s book out first.
Documents, deposit and insurance: questions to ask
Before you pay anything, make sure the quote answers each of these. A good rental arrangement has nothing to hide here.
- [ ] Which licence do you need? Visitors: national licence plus International Driving Permit. Residents: a Rwandan licence, or a foreign one within your first 12 months.
- [ ] How much is the deposit, how is it held (cash, mobile money, card) and how quickly is it returned?
- [ ] What does the insurance cover beyond the compulsory third party policy? Is there collision and theft cover for the car itself?
- [ ] What is the excess, the amount you pay towards damage after an accident? It may be a fixed sum or a percentage of the repair bill.
- [ ] Is there a daily kilometre limit, and what does each extra kilometre cost?
- [ ] Who handles a breakdown upcountry, and is a replacement vehicle provided?
- [ ] Can a second driver be added, and do they need to be named?
- [ ] Are border crossings allowed, and with what paperwork?
Fuel costs and filling up
Fuel is normally the renter's cost. RURA, the utilities regulator, sets maximum pump prices that apply nationwide. As of October 2026 the cap is RWF 2,938 per litre for petrol and RWF 2,927 for diesel, much higher than in late 2025, when petrol was RWF 1,989. Budget for this when you plan a long trip. A simple formula works: distance in kilometres, divided by your car's kilometres per litre, multiplied by the pump price. For example, a car that does 10 km per litre on a 300 km round trip uses about 30 litres, roughly RWF 88,000 of petrol at today's cap.
Stations are common along the main highways to Musanze, Huye and Rubavu and in towns, but much less common inside or near the parks. Fill up before you leave the last town.
Driving around Kigali: local things to know
- Umuganda. On the last Saturday of each month, community work runs from 08:00 to 11:00 and most traffic stops. Plan airport runs and pick-ups around it.
- Car Free Day. On the first and third Sunday of the month, some main roads close to motor traffic from about 07:00 to 10:00 for walking and cycling.
- Speed cameras. Kigali and the main highways have hundreds of fixed cameras. A speeding fine is RWF 25,000, rising if not paid within days, and it is linked to the car's plate, so it comes back to the renter.
- Hills and rain. Kigali is built on steep hills. Afternoon storms in the rainy seasons can make roads slippery, so leave more space and slow down.
Self-drive, with driver, 4x4 or airport?
Each type of hire has its own page with the details that matter most:

- Car hire with a driver: business days, events, day trips and what the driver fee covers.
- 4x4 car rental in Rwanda: park fees, routes, distances and border crossing questions.
- Car hire at Kigali Airport: meet and greet at KGL, flight delays and drop-off before you fly.

Frequently asked questions
How much does car hire in Kigali cost?
As of October 2026, published self-drive rates in Kigali start at about USD 45 per day for a Toyota RAV4 and about USD 60 to 110 per day for a Land Cruiser Prado or TX, with lower daily rates for longer rentals. Aggregator averages sit around USD 84 per day. Send your dates and we will confirm an exact quote.
What documents do I need to hire a car in Kigali?
A valid driving licence and a passport or national ID. Visitors should carry an International Driving Permit together with their national licence. Residents can use a foreign licence for 12 months before they must exchange it for a Rwandan one through the Rwanda National Police.
Is there a minimum rental period?
Most rentals are charged by the full day, counted in 24 hour blocks from the handover time. Weekly and monthly hires usually bring the daily rate down, so tell us your full dates rather than booking day by day.
Who pays for fuel?
Fuel is usually paid by the renter. As of October 2026, RURA capped pump prices at RWF 2,938 per litre for petrol and RWF 2,927 for diesel. Most cars are handed over with a set fuel level and should come back with the same level.
Can I take a hire car outside Kigali?
Yes. Trips anywhere in Rwanda are normal, including Musanze, Rubavu, Huye, Akagera and Nyungwe. Tell us your route so we can match the vehicle to the roads, and recommend a 4x4 for park tracks and unpaved access roads.
Can I drive a Kigali hire car into Uganda or Tanzania?
Only with written permission from the vehicle owner, the registration documents and cross border insurance such as the COMESA Yellow Card. Not every vehicle can be released for border trips, so mention it when you request a quote.
Is insurance included in the price?
Third party motor insurance is compulsory in Rwanda, so every legal hire car carries it. Damage cover for the hire car itself, and the excess you would pay after an accident, vary by vehicle and owner. Your quote states both before you confirm.
