Start your trip the easy way with car hire at Kigali Airport. We meet you at Kigali International Airport (KGL) in Kanombe with your car, or with a driver if you prefer, so you can head straight to your hotel, your meeting or the road to the parks. Send your flight number and arrival time, and we plan the handover around your actual landing, not the timetable.

How airport car hire works

  1. Book ahead with your flight number, arrival date and time, the vehicle you want and how long you need it.
  2. We track the flight and confirm the handover time the day before, with the name and WhatsApp of the person meeting you.
  3. Meet and greet at arrivals. We walk you to the car, check it together and hand over the keys and documents. With a driver, they take your bags and you go.
  4. Drop off at the airport on your departure day, or anywhere in Kigali agreed in advance.

Where the airport is and how long it takes

Kigali International Airport sits in Kanombe, in Kicukiro District, under 10 km east of the city centre. The usual route runs along the airport road through Remera towards the Kigali Convention Centre and the centre. Expect 20 to 40 minutes to most hotels, longer at rush hour.

Arriving late at night

Many long haul flights land in Kigali in the evening or around midnight. For late arrivals we confirm the handover the day before, share the name and photo of the person meeting you, and keep in touch on WhatsApp while you clear immigration and collect your bags. If you are self-driving, plan a short first drive: your hotel in Kimihurura, Kiyovu or Remera rather than an upcountry lodge. Roads outside Kigali are unlit, hilly and shared with cyclists and pedestrians after dark, so start long drives the next morning.

Business and group arrivals

For conference delegations, film crews or wedding guests, we can line up several cars or minibuses with drivers for one arrival time, with a single coordinator's number. Send the passenger list, flight numbers and hotels, and we plan who travels in which vehicle, including luggage space for equipment.

After a long flight: drive or be driven?

Many visitors arrive after an overnight flight. If you would rather not face right-hand traffic, speed cameras and Kigali's hills straight away, book car hire with a driver for the first day, then switch to self-drive car rental once you are rested. We can deliver the self-drive car to your hotel the next morning.

Airport pick-ups for residents and visiting family

Airport hire is not only for tourists. Residents often book a car or a driver to collect visiting parents, a new colleague or a returning family with a lot of luggage, especially when the flight lands late. You can book the pick-up in the guest's name, share their flight number, and have the driver hold a name sign at arrivals and message you once they are on the road.

Returning the car before your flight

  • Fill up near the airport so the fuel level matches the handover.
  • Arrive with enough time for the vehicle check before you join the queue for security.
  • Remove your belongings and check the glovebox and boot.
  • Keep the return photos until the deposit is back in your account.
  • Any fines or damage are settled against the deposit, and the balance is returned as agreed.

Prices

Airport handovers use the same daily rates as our car hire in Kigali. As of October 2026, published self-drive rates in Kigali start at about USD 45 per day for a Toyota RAV4 and about USD 60 to 110 per day for a Land Cruiser Prado or TX. Any airport delivery fee or night handover fee is shown clearly in your quote before you book.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Share your flight number in the form. We track the arrival and move the handover time to match, so you are not charged for waiting caused by the airline. If the flight is cancelled or rerouted, message us on WhatsApp and we will rearrange the handover.

How far is the airport from central Kigali?

Kigali International Airport is in Kanombe, in Kicukiro District, under 10 km east of the city centre. The drive usually takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on the time of day and traffic around Remera.

Can I return the car at the airport?

Yes. Airport drop-off can be arranged for the day you fly out. Allow time for the vehicle check and the fuel level before you go through security, and agree the meeting point in advance.

Can I collect a car at night?

Late evening and early morning handovers can be arranged for most flights. Give us the flight number and arrival time, and we confirm the handover in your quote. If you are tired after a long flight, consider a driver for the first evening.

What documents do I need at the airport?

Your passport, your valid national driving licence and an International Driving Permit if you are a visitor. Have the deposit ready in the form agreed in your quote. If you hire with a driver, you only need your booking details.

Can I drive straight from the airport to a national park?

Yes. Akagera's gate is about 110 km away and Musanze about 2.5 to 3 hours by road, so a morning arrival gives you time to reach either in daylight. Choose a 4x4 for Akagera and fill up before leaving Kigali.
